11. All References to Baptizo, Baptisma and Baptismos in the New Covenant

The following list contains the author’s translations that should be compared with other versions. The intent is to stimulate other ways of thinking about certain passages. Significant variations in translation are discussed in earlier or later chapters of this book. The Greek “en hudati” has been rendered “with water” instead of “in water” while the “eis to onoma” has been rendered “into the name” rather than “in.” The text of the Fourth Revised Edition of The Greek New Testament was followed.

“And now what do you intend? Arise, get yourself baptized and get yourself washed from your sins, calling on His name.”

Baptism According to Paul

(In chronological order)

GALATIANS

Galatians 3:26-28

For you are all sons of God through faith in Messiah Yeshua. For, as many of you who into Messiah were baptized, Messiah you put on. There is neither Jew nor Greek, neither slave nor freeman, neither male nor female; for you are all one in Messiah Yeshua.

1 CORINTHIANS

1 Corinthians 1:10,13-17

Now I exhort you brethren, by the name of our Lord Yeshua the Messiah, that you all agree, and there be no divisions among you....Or into the name of Paul were you baptized? I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, that no man should say that into my name you were baptized. Now I also baptized the household of Stephanas; for the rest, I do not know if I baptized any others. For Messiah did not send me to baptize, but to announce the good news, not in cleverness of speech, that the cross of Messiah should not be made void.

1 Corinthians 10:1-2

For I do not wish you to be ignorant brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea, and all into Moses were baptized by the cloud and by the sea.

1 Corinthians 12:13

For indeed, with one Spirit we all into one body were baptized, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we all one Spirit were given to drink.

1 Corinthians 15:29

Since what shall they do, those, who themselves are baptizing on behalf of the dead. If the dead are not rising at all, why also are they baptizing on their behalf?

ROMANS

Romans 6:3-6

Are you ignorant that as many of us as were baptized into Messiah Yeshua, into His death we were baptized? Therefore we were co-entombed with Him through the baptism into the death, that as Messiah was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so also we in newness of life might walk. For if we have become united in the sameness of His death, so also of His resurrection we will be, knowing this, that our old man was co-crucified, that our body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin.

EPHESIANS

Ephesians 4:3-6

Being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all.

COLOSSIANS

Colossians 2:8-12

See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the traditions of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Messiah.

For in Him dwells all the fulness of Deity bodily, and in Him you are complete, who is the head of all rule and authority. In Him you also were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, in the removal of the flesh by the circumcision of Messiah.

Co-entombed with Him in the baptism, in whom also you were co-raised through the faith in the operation of God, raising Him from the dead.

HEBREWS

Hebrews 6:1-2

Therefore, leaving the beginning discourse about Messiah let us go on to maturity, not again laying a foundation of repentance from dead works, and faith toward God, instruction about baptisms, and laying on of hands, of the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgement.

Hebrews 9:9-10

Accordingly both gifts and sacrifices are offered which cannot perfect the conscience of the worshipper, only on foods and drinks and different kinds of baptisms, regulations of flesh until a time of amendment is imposed.

1 PETER

1 Peter 3:21

Which also an antitype now saves us, baptism, not of flesh, a putting away filth, but of a good conscience, the answer to inquiry into God through the resurrection of Yeshua the Messiah.

BAPTISM AND MESSIAH YESHUA

A Chronological Review

Matthew 3:13-16, Mark 1:9-11, Luke 3:21-22

Messiah came to R. John to be baptized with “John’s Baptism,” the end-time, Messianic purification for Israel, and identified fully with the people of Israel. Messiah would have heard R. John’s declaration that he baptized with water, Messiah would baptize with the Holy Spirit.

John 3:22-26

Messiah Yeshua endorsed the end-time Messianic baptism for Israel and had His disciples continue to administer it, in Judea, some distance from R. John and his disciples. R. John had not yet been arrested.

John 4:1-2

Yeshua did not personally administer the end-time Messianic baptism to Israel, His disciples did. Nevertheless, He had more success at proclaiming the nearness of the promised Kingdom than did R. John. It is possible the Lord wanted to ensure the distinction between R. John, who baptized with water, and Himself, who would baptize with the Holy Spirit, was clear.

Luke 7:29-30

After R. John was arrested Messiah Yeshua spoke to the Jewish crowds following Him of the greatness of R. John. Those who had believed and had undergone “John’s Baptism” rejoiced. Those of the Scribes and Pharisees who did not believe R. John’s message were not baptized with “John’s Baptism” and refused God’s plan for themselves. This passage shows Messiah and His disciples did not administer a different water baptism earlier in John 3:22-26, they endorsed and performed the Messianic baptism originally proclaimed by R. John.

Mark 7:4,8

Jewish tradition had added many “baptisms” to daily Jewish life. Messiah Yeshua gives them no endorsement.

Luke 11:38

Messiah Yeshua again ignores a tradition of baptism, of hands, and tells the surprised Pharisees how to really be clean before the living God.

Luke 12:50

Messiah uses the words to describe an event of radical influence (presumably in His life), but not an “immersion” or even a Jewish purification ritual.

Mark 10:38-39

Messian uses the words to promise His disciples a time of terrible suffering, not “immersion,” nor a Jewish purification ritual.

Matthew 21:25

Mark 11:30

Luke 20:4

Messiah asks Israel’s leaders from whence came R. John’s baptism, from heaven or men, expecting an answer of “from heaven,” i.e. commanded of God for the people of Israel.

AFTER THE RESURRECTION

Matthew 28:19

Messiah commanded His eleven Jewish apostles to make disciples of all the defiled idolatrous nations, baptizing them into the name of the Triune God of Israel. This has nothing to do with water, but with teaching them the truth of God and “transforming” their lives.

Mark 16:16

Messiah teaches, “He who believes and is radically purified (transformed) will be saved.”

Acts 1:5

Messiah Yeshua again endorses R. John’s baptism, and contrasts it with His own work of baptizing with the Holy Spirit. There is no sign here of a new “Christian water baptism.”

Acts 11:16

The Jewish apostle Peter defends himself by quoting Messiah Yeshua’s word, “R. John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”

1 Corinthians 1:17

Messiah did not send His chosen apostle to the gentiles to baptize with water.
